Exornight: A Spooky-Chic Display Font for Handmade Labels, Invitations & More

Designing Halloween Candles – When the Font Sets the Mood

As I sat at my desk, prepping candle labels for an upcoming Halloween market, I realized the font I had been using just wasn’t capturing the eerie charm I wanted. I opened my design software and scrolled through my font library until I landed on Exornight. From the first letter I typed, the mood shifted. The sharp angles, subtle shadows, and slightly off-kilter curves gave my candle labels a handmade, haunted house feel that felt both vintage and modern.

What Makes Exornight Stand Out?

Exornight is a display font with a personality that leans into the dramatic. It’s not your average script or serif—it has a unique visual rhythm that draws the eye without overwhelming the design. Whether you're printing boutique tags or designing digital invitations, this font brings a touch of spooky elegance or gothic flair depending on how you use it.

Its letterforms are slightly irregular, giving it that hand-crafted appeal that’s perfect for seasonal products. The contrast between thick and thin strokes adds depth, and the subtle decorative elements make it ideal for short phrases, titles, or decorative accents. It's a font that feels alive in your hands, like it’s part of the story you're telling through your handmade products.

Perfect for Handmade Halloween & Holiday Labels

I first used Exornight on candle labels for a Halloween-themed line. I paired it with a simple kraft paper label and a black wax seal. The font looked incredible printed in a matte black ink—clean but with a hint of texture that made it feel like it belonged in a vintage apothecary. It was the perfect balance of spooky and sophisticated.

Since then, I've used it for a variety of label styles—especially for seasonal products. From holiday tags to boutique packaging, Exornight adapts well to different materials. Whether you're printing on sticker paper, vinyl, or directly onto mugs or tote bags, this font holds up beautifully at small sizes while still maintaining its character.

Wedding Invitations with a Dark Romantic Edge

Last fall, I helped a friend design a rustic-chic wedding invitation suite with a moody, autumnal palette. We used Exornight for the bride and groom’s names and the event date. The font’s dramatic flair gave the design a sense of elegance and uniqueness that stood out from more traditional calligraphy styles.

It worked especially well when printed in deep burgundy ink on textured ivory cardstock. The contrast between the rich color and the font’s delicate strokes made the text feel both modern and timeless. If you're crafting invitations for a wedding, bridal shower, or engagement party with a darker or more artistic theme, Exornight could be the standout element you're looking for.

From Planner Pages to Digital Downloads

I also use Exornight in my digital printable shop, especially for seasonal planner pages and Halloween-themed templates. It’s a great choice for digital designers who want to add a bit of flair without sacrificing readability. On a printable Halloween bucket list or a spooky-themed habit tracker, Exornight gives the design a playful yet polished edge.

Because it's a display font, I recommend using it for headers or accent text rather than long blocks of body copy. It shines best when used for titles, names, or short quotes that need to stand out.

Pairing Exornight with Other Fonts

One of the joys of using a bold display font like Exornight is experimenting with font pairings. For most of my label and invitation designs, I pair it with a clean sans serif like Montserrat or Lato for body text. This creates a nice visual balance and ensures the design remains easy to read.

If I'm going for a more whimsical or handwritten look, I’ll use a soft script font like Great Vibes or a casual handwritten style for secondary text. You can also layer it with a bold serif for a more dramatic editorial feel—perfect for boutique packaging or limited-edition product tags.

Practical Tips for Using Exornight

Before printing or cutting, I always test how Exornight looks at different sizes. At very small sizes (under 12pt), some of the finer details may get lost, especially on stickers or product tags. I recommend adjusting the tracking or using it at 14pt or larger for the best results.

When using Exornight in Cricut or Silhouette projects, make sure to check the font's outline to ensure it cuts cleanly. Some decorative fonts can have overlapping strokes that confuse the machine. Exornight usually handles this well, but a quick test cut on scrap material can save time and materials.

Commercial Use & Licensing

If you're planning to use Exornight in your handmade shop, make sure to check the licensing terms. Most premium display fonts come with commercial use rights, but it's always good to confirm whether it’s allowed for physical products, digital templates, or printables. I always keep a copy of the license agreement in my design files for future reference.

Also, be sure to check if the font includes alternate characters, ligatures, or swashes. Some versions of Exornight offer extended character sets and multilingual support, which is helpful if you're creating products for international customers or multilingual designs.

Final Touches: From Packaging to Seasonal Branding

Exornight has become a go-to font in my design toolkit. Whether I’m printing boutique tags for a new candle line or designing a Halloween-themed printable wall art set, it brings a sense of character and intentionality to every project.

It’s especially effective for seasonal branding. I’ve used it in Halloween shop banners, Christmas tags, and even for a New Year’s party printable collection. Its adaptability and strong visual identity make it a font that can grow with your creative business.
